The President’s Wife, Hajiya Aisha Buhari, has tasked the Katsina State Government to embark on enlightenment campaign on the dangers of sickle-cell for the benefit of the people. Mrs Buhari stated this during the screening and treatment of 2,000 sickle-cell patients on Thursday in Katsina. She advised that the sickle-cell enlightenment campaign should be carried out on monthly basis to reduce the spread of the disease. According to her, the North West sub-region has the highest rate of people suffering from the disease in the country. “There is the need for officials of the Ministry of Health to encourage people to conduct genotype screening so as to know their status,’’’ she said.   Katsina state Governor, Aminu Bello Masari has vowed to any teacher found to be behind the recent protest by students over the reintroduction of mock examinations in schools. Speaking when he met with principals, vice principals and teachers at the weekend, Masari said there was no going back on the policy as wastes can no longer be condoned. He added, it was disheartening to see that billions of Naira was spent on payment of WAEC and NECO examinations without commensurate benefits, adding; "we must tell ourselves  the bitter truth that government cannot continue to afford sponsoring failures". President Muhammadu Buhari has appointed Mrs Maryam Uwais, the wife of the former Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) Justice Muhammadu Uwais as his Special Adviser for Social Protection Plan. Mrs. Uwais is a respected lawyer with over 30 years experience, including serving as principal partner at Wali Uwais & Co, an Abuja-based law firm. The special adviser graduated with an LL.B from the Ahmadu Bello University Zaria, in 1980 and was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1981, after attending the Nigerian Law School, Lagos. In 1985, she bagged a Masters in Law from the same university. Mrs Uwais worked at the Kano State Ministry of Justice between 1980 and 1987.

The Katsina State Government on Tuesday released N811 million for the payment of gratuities to 406 retirees.

The state Commissioner for Finance, Muntari Kado, who made this known at a press briefing in Katsina, said 1,229 pensioners, who retired from service, were screened by the pension verification committee. The commissioner explained that the payment of the pensioners would be in phases in order to avoid congestion in the banks selected for the payment. He said the payment would be through Access Bank which has only four branches in the state. ‘’A person has the right to transfer his money to any bank of his choice after payment,’’ Mr. Kado said. The commissioner said the verification committee had also screened no fewer than 3,000 pensioners formerly in the local government service. He urged pensioners to bear with the situation while the government was trying to settle their entitlements. Mr. Kado said the remaining 823 pensioners would be paid their entitlements within a short time as promised by the governor. The state government had secured N11 billion loan from the C

 The Federal Government disclosed last weekend that the 10 mega watt, MW, Katsina wind farm has attained 98 percent completion.  The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Power, Amb. Godknows Igali, who said this in Abuja noted that the test running of the 37 turbines in the facility had since begun with five already successfully test-run. He also said the transmission line for the evacuation of the power to be produced is ready through the Transmission Company of Nigeria, TCN, as confirmed by their officials.  Igali disclosed further that Government is committed to ensuring the smooth running of this pilot scheme, adding that it planned to replicate it in the entire Northern region, where wind velocity is high, stressing that the harnessing of wind resource is an integral part of the newly approved National Policy on Sustainable Energy and Energy Efficiency. Katsina State governor Aminu Bello Masari has reafirmed the determination of his administration to boost education, especially girl-child education, saying that more resources would be devoted to the sector. Speaking yesterday during the close of holiday camp organised for 250 girls drawn from schools across the state, Masari said his administration was committed to the development of education as one of its top priorities. Masari, who spoke through the state deputy governor, Mannir Yakubu, said the largest chunk of 2016 budget was allocated to education to help underscore government’s commitment. He said, “This government will continue to do all that is possible within its limited resources for the development of education” He also tasked the girls to make good use of the skills and knowledge acquired during the holiday camp, assuring that the state government would not waver in executing laudable programmes for educational development of the state.

The payment will commence tomorrow, Tuesday with 406 beneficiaries as first batch of the payment through Access Bank. The retirees who served at Local Governments, should exercise patient a little bit, till their screening exercise is over and assures them of his support and commitments.

The Katsina State Government Has Vowed To Engage Not Less Than 9,000 Unmployed Youths Within The State.

No fewer than nine thousand unemployed youths would be engaged by the Katsina State government, Governor Aminu Bello Masari has said. Masari disclosed this on Saturday when he recieved the Emir of Daura, Umar Faruk Umar and his entourage at the Katsina Government House also known as Gidan Al’ummah. The emir and his entourage were at the Government House to pay special homage to Governor Masari for the maulud celebration. According to Governor Masari, the state has concluded plans to roll out different packages to effectively engage the youths in line with an overal drive to address unemployment. Masari said his administration attached great importance to the well being of the youths but was silent on the type of job being planned for the youths. Our correspondent reports that the state governor had pledged to revamp the Katsina Youth Craft Village and revive the Business Apprenticeship Training Centres BATCs “to give more skills training to the youths”.

FG to spend $300m on youth agric scheme

The African Development Bank (AfDB) has disclosed plans to spend about $300 million on the Enable Youth Empowerment Agribusiness Programme. The project is to be implemented in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development within 18 months. AfDB Director of Agricultural and Agro- Allied Industries, Dr.ChudiOjukwu, said the three-year project would enable training and funding of young graduates who are interested in farming across the country. The programme is expected to encourage youths into agriculture, thereby increasing food sufficiency and reducing unemployment, with each recipient accessing $75, 000. In a statement by the ministry’s Director of Information, Tony Ohaeri, on Wednesday in Abuja, the Agriculture Minister, Chief Audu Ogbeh, disclosed that the project would commence from the three Federal Universities of Agriculture in the country. I emphasized on the need for youth involvement in all processes, the need for extensive voters education before elections and the provision of adequate security during elections to eradicate electoral violence which mostly affects the youths.
